WELCOME! BIENVENIDO!
to the International Kids' Movement to Save La Oroya
Hola! We are the kids of CAMBIALO, and we are organizing an international movement of kids and families to save our hometown of La Oroya, Peru.
La Oroya is one of the ten most contaminated cities in the world. In fact, 97% of the kids (including us!) have lead poisoning. That's almost 11,000 kids! The source of the lead poisoning is a lead smelter operated by a company called Doe Run Peru which is owned by a billionaire from New York City. The lead smelter spews out tons of toxins everyday, poisoning the water, the soil and the air, and ultimately us.
But, we have a plan! To clean up La Oroya is going to require your help! These are our strategies:
1. Do our part! (trash pick-up days, organic garden projects and more)
2. Inspire other kids in La Oroya! (parades, photo contests, murals and street fairs)
3. Create International Awareness! (videos, letters, skype, email... and this web page!)
Until now, our voice has not been heard -- by the owner, by the politicians, not even by other kids in town. Few people are listening! So, that's what this movement is about -- getting our voice heard so that our town, and our bodies, can be cleaned up. Find out on this website how you can join us!
